VETERAN NEWS OF TOWN OF NEW HUDSON, Allegany County, NY
Another Civil War Vet Photo Identified
It started as an email to me:
"The photo of the Civil War Vet is from my Grandmother's Beatrice Gleason's collection. The only thing written on the photo is that it is an uncle of Abigail Lucinda (Patterson) Williams (1850-1933). She was married to George W. Williams (1849-1934) in the New Hudson area. Abigail's Father was Porter Patterson (1819-1861) and Mother was Abigail Lewis (1818-1885). Sometimes the name is spelled Pattyson. They lived in the New Hudson area until Porters death and then Abigail moved the children to Cattaraugus County. Porter Patterson's Brothers were Isaac, Philonas, Silas, Cyrus, Darius,
Andrew, & James. The latter two did not live past 1864. (sons of Joseph & Lucinda (Spencer) Patterson always in the New Hudson area.) I shouldn't assume the photo is a Patterson, for it could be a Lewis or Spencer........ The only clue I have is the ribbon he is wearing. The photo was taken in Cuba, NY. I have tried looking up information on several Civil War sites but I think I need help on this one. Again, I have many photos of people and school groups in that area which I would be happy to share. If you know of anyone who is working with the descendents of Jonathon Gleason, the Patterson's, Lewis's, Spencer's, Marsh's.......I would be happy to work with them.
Thank you again, Cassie Yarsky"
And after some research by our webmaster:
Cassie,
I found your Uncle's GAR Post as Columbia, Kansas. It is the John A. Dix Post. I'm sure that is what it also says on his badge when I blow the picture up. I'm not sure how he got with a GAR post in Kansas, but, that will give you another lead to follow. Ron Taylor
"Hi Ron,
After doing a little more research I find that the photo is of Darius Pattyson. Born 1832 in New Hudson, NY. Enlisted on 29 Nov 1861. Co. I NY 85th
Infantry Reg. Received a disability discharge on 30 of Oct 1862 in Point Lookout MD. He married Catherine Higbee and eventually moved to Columbus, Cherokee county, Kansas where he died. Parents were Joseph Pattyson and Lucinda D. Spencer. Thank you for your help!
