Briggs/State Road/US Cemetery
"Briggs or State Road Cemetery. This small cemetery is located near the New York Pennsylvania Line in the southeastern part of Independence and was also called the "Cemetery Near the United States School. It is claimed that this school was attended by pupils from both states. Most of the graves are those of early settlers."

The Members of Thelma Rogers Genealogical & Historical Society ca.1961, recorded this cemetery. To add further credence to their research, they attached a small clipping which substantiates the name of the area school as "United States Schoolhouse", which was located near the "United States Cemetery".

She is assumed to be Betsey Church, Dau of Caleb Church, a Revolutionary War Soldier. It is quite probable that Caleb Church came to this area about the same time that Wm Reynolds and his wife Lydia Church Reynolds and their son Col. Wm Reynolds Jr settled in Independence.
