Ina G. Church, Chairman, Genealogical Records Committee, Catherine Schuyler, DAR wrote the following along with the list of canvassed markers prior to the printing of "The Alma Story" by the author, Hazel M. Shear in 1959.
"This cemetery is on County Route 18 and just off County Route 38, close to the village of Alma. Its nearly-forgotten name is established from a deed in Liber 133, p 131, Allegany County Deeds. It was given by Mrs. E. P. Watkins and husband to John C. Gadsby for the Sunnyside Cemetery Association in 1885. The deed describes the "old cemetery" and shows a change in lines. A map is given, partially in color."
In 1991 a sign was dedicated to mark the name by the Dickerson Family.
