Cuba Lake Raceway, 50's stock car racing, 11th annual reunion/luncheon for 50s and 60s stock car racing interests, July 31st 2013
The 11th annual Cuba Lake Raceway(CLR) reunion/lucheon will be held on Wednesday July 31st, 2013 at Moonwinks restaurant just north of the village of Cuba, NY on Rt. 305 and 1/2 mile from the site of the old CLR track. The great Don Yochum now 88 years young of the three-some Yochum brothers is traveling all the way from his home in Florida with his daughter to attend this years reunion. Many other drivers from the 50s/60s era are also planning on attending such as: DeVere Bliss, Bucky Dew, Dick Ferraro, Otto Goodwin, Dolly Gosper, Jerry Gradl, Cal Lane, Ted Renshaw, Sammy LaMancuso, Blinky Litzinger, Chuck McKeirnan, Doug Pringle, Leon Reed, Billy Schroth, Jim Scott, Ken See(the mystery man), Al Skiver, Ron Williams, Peter Hurtubise, Fred Hurst, Sonnie Wittmeyer, Dick Close, Herb Layfield, Ron Baker, Bill Tingue, Art Clark, Dick Hurd, Bill Rafter, Ed Ortiz, Squirt Johns, Tom Dill, Harold Sager, Bill Higby, Basil Shutt to name few. Several 50's track owner/builders are planning on attending too: Paul Amidon(Hornell Raceway), Howard Boyce(South Senaca Speedway), Don McNitt(Roll - O - Bowl Speedway) and last but not least Helen Smith(Hunt Speedway). Past luncheon/reunions have had drivers and other notables of that era of racing from 7 States and Canada attending. The MC duties again this year will be in the very capable hands of Larry Dye who raced at CLR and was the announcer at many local tracks along with being the chief camera spotter for the NASCAR races until his retirement from that duty a few years ago.
Registration starts at 10:30 with lunch at 12:15pm. Sit-down luncheon has an entree choice of Scampi style Haddock or Roast Turkey with Stuffing & Gravy along with all the trimmings. Cost of $14.00/person includes full meal, beverage(alcohol drinks not included but may be purchased if desired), tax and gratuity.

Program:
I am pleased to announce that our guest speaker will be Stub Weigartz a very well known driver in the NE as he raced from 1954 - 1964 at many tracks in the Southern Tier of NYS and across the border in Western PA along with special races at the Syracuse mile, Daytona beach coarse and the PA State championship in 1955. Stub won over 100 feature races and a number of championships during his racing career. He started his racing career driving a Hudson Terraplain in 54 then with a Cadillac in 55 and on to a Dodge in 56. The balance of his racing career found him behind the wheels of many Oldsmobiles. I have talked with Stub many times and he is very articulated so I know everyone will enjoy his stories of racing and behind the scenes at the tracks many of us attended in the 50's and 60's.
Stub will be using a screen presentation of early racing photos while doing the vocal presentation in time with the pictures on the screen. I am really looking forward to it as I have heard a couple of Stub's stories in the past so if you loved 50's and 60's stock car racing or have been told about it, you will be in 7th heaven on July 31st.
How is that for a great speaker program this year. As noted above the price for the reunion/luncheon will be the same as it has been for the last 10 year, $14 for an unbeatable sit-down meal and a great speaker program unequaled anywhere along with being able to visit with the greats that attend that were our heroes 50-60 some years ago. Dress code is casual so come early for registration, grab a coffee or tea, courtesy of Moonwinks, and visit with all the other 180 or so that are attending with you. Many drivers and fans bring pictures and related memorabilia that is available for viewing in the room just off the main dining room too.
