A Gift for Mr. Minard
Purse of Nearly $40 Raised for Aged Allegany Historian at Belmont During Supervisors' Meeting
Last week during this session of the board of supervisors at Belmont, the suggestion was made by someone that it would be a kind act, in keeping with the Christmas spirit, to raise a purse of money for John Minard, the Allegany county historian, now blind and helpless. The words were promptly acted upon, and in a few minutes the supervisors and others has had chipped in almost $40, which was passed along to Mr. Minard with the compliments of the season. Needless to say, the aged gentleman greatly appreciated the gift.
As indicating the spirit in which the act was done, we quote the following from the heading of the subscription paper:
Let us live and laugh and "Lift."
Whereas it is becoming at this time of the year to spread Christmas cheer let us residents of Grand Old Allegany honor one of our best citizens and foremost historian in the following manner to wit:
"We and each of us do hereby subscribe the sum set opposite our respective names for a Christmas present to John S. Minard, the grand old historian of Grand Old Allegany."
